Hi Sam, the number is part of the chord, e.g., in CM7, it means C-Major-7th, i.e., it is a different chord from C (C-Major) or Cm (C-minor). A C-Major-7th has the 7th note included. Similarly, a G4 is a G chord with its 4th note included. I hope this explanation helps. :b
